When we talk about a famous gaming company like Nintendo, we probably think of a gaming company that has its own fan base and market with its own consoles and games. Every game is great, every pickle is great. But before our grandfather Nin got to this point, he was struggling. The gaming console didn’t sell, and when they released a game, they were also criticized. One of them was a gaming console called Virtual Boy, the first 3D gaming console that Nintendo had wanted to make for a long time. (It even reached success on the Nintendo 3DS) But instead of the machine itself, this game was a success. It failed in every aspect, including the game, the gameplay system, and the gaming console, which was described as so bad that Nintendo didn’t want to consider Virtual Boy as its child. July 21, 1995 was the release date. The Virtual Boy gaming machine is 29 years old. Let’s look back and see the story of this game and how bad it was.
The Virtual Boy is a 32-bit desktop handheld video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo and released in 1995, marketed as the first console capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D graphics. The player must use their head to position themselves in the viewfinder. To view the red-black-and-white screen in the game (as shown in the image below), the game uses parallax effects to create the illusion of depth. In addition to eye pain during and after play, only 22 games were released before production was canceled and they went on sale in just one year.
The Virtual Boy took four years to develop. Starting as Project VR32, Nintendo entered into a licensing agreement to use the LED stereoscopic lens technology. It was developed in the 1980s by the American company Reflection Technology and built a factory in China that was used solely to produce the Virtual Boy. During development, the Virtual Boy was downsized due to its high cost. This was not Nintendo's policy of wanting to sell expensive hardware. (However, this device was expensive to sell.) In addition, many resources were diverted at the time to developing the company's new console, the Nintendo 64. Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that he had very little involvement in the Virtual Boy software and the device is said to have been released before it was completed. To make the team focus on the Nintendo 64
The Virtual Boy was heavily criticized and failed commercially. Although Grandpa Nen has repeatedly reduced the price of the machine, it is still not a sale. The failure of this game machine is due to its high price. In addition, the screen is dark and only has red and black colors. As for the 3D visual effects that are the selling point, they are not impressive. In addition, the stand and screen are not ergonomically correct. When playing, it not only hurts the eyes, but also hurts the neck due to the tension during the game, in addition, the 3D images cause many players to have headaches, nausea, and eye strain. Try to find one to play. So far, Nintendo has not even talked about this game console. It is called Coming Fast, Moving Fast, and Ending in a very sad way for this game machine.
Anyone interested in owning a Virtual Boy should take the machine and try to destroy their eyesight to see if it is really that bad. You have to pay ten thousand baht to own it. Because don't forget that this gaming machine was only out for a year and then disappeared from the market, so there were very few of them, even with game discs, you can stop thinking about it. But if anyone is interested, there must be someone who will bring an emulator for this game to play it. Try playing and see how much the red and black images will make you enjoy the game. Because there are some things, you know they are there but you don't have to try them all, and the case of the Virtual Boy is a good example that we don't want you to try.
