Just seven weeks into the 2022 NFL season, there are already questions about Denver Broncos Coach Nathaniel Hackett. After high hopes for the Broncos’ return to the playoffs, they are 2-5 and arguably the worst attack in the NFL, paired with one of the league’s best defenses.
The Broncos also have new ownership – the Walton/Penner Group – who may be asking whether or not Hackett will ever prove to be the right man for the head coaching job.
This is what Mike Florio did Professional football debate Wonders. Florio discussed Bronco’s training status for the October 24 edition Rich Eisen Showwhere he talked about the Walton-Penner property group and how they view business situations.
“What I do know is that they have a group of owners who never hired Nathaniel Hackett and the Walmart crowd, they are smart, wealthy and ruthless — and I mean in the most positive way a ruthless word can be used. They will not make anything other than a calculated strategic business decision about what to do with Nathaniel. Hackett”.
Florio mentioned that he’s spoken to other people in the NFL about how teams can compound mistakes by not acknowledging them. But he added that the best football teams are the quickest to admit mistakes, and if the Broncos lose to Jacksonville Jaguars This week, Walton Benner’s ownership group may have seen enough.
closer to home, Radio KOABenjamin Albright, a Broncos insider, also spoke on the subject of the new owners showing the door to Hackett if things continued to run sideways across the pond.
“I was going to say (and don’t have) the season shoot, and that they’d wait until after the year, but I know the ownership is embarrassing. I really felt a shift yesterday if this thing wasn’t changed so quickly and anything is possible,” Albright said on Twitter.
Bring it back to Florio, who also put forward Peter’s Principle, which says that everyone rises to their own level of incompetence – which means that you are promoted to the top of the ladder until you reach a position you don’t hold for long because you are no longer. t’s good at it. That’s when Florio mentioned the likes of Wade Phillips and Norve Turner, both senior coordinators who went on to get head coaching jobs but had little success in the role.
Some people have questioned Hackett and his experience calling plays, but he’s done so in the past with Jaguars and buffalo bills. It’s certainly possible that Hackett is a good coordinator who can’t handle the role of head coach.
But as Florio said, it is possible that the Broncos’ owners will ask if defensive coordinator Ijero Iveiro should get a chance to stabilize the team, as the focus is on defense, simplification of attack, and they can see who can make the most of it. Russell Wilson.

“These people are not going to take any choices off the table and have no loyalty to anyone who was working there the moment they got the car keys,” Florio told Eisen.
Florio also mentioned Sean Payton, who some Broncos fans are promoting as a savior and replacement for Hackett. However, the New Orleans Saints He owns his rights and will demand recruiting choices for any team he wants to hire. Most likely, that would mean a first-round pick for 2023, which the Broncos didn’t have because he was sent to the Seahawks.
On top of that, Florio said Payton might be more interested in working with the younger quarterback, bringing Los Angeles Chargers And the Arizona Cardinalsand both have QBs with more years than Wilson.
While Broncos fans may have to give up on Payton’s dream, that doesn’t mean Hackett will continue. And while I suspect any coach taking charge will have its own struggle, that doesn’t mean the ownership group won’t be quick to move on from Hackett.
What’s going on with Broncos General Manager George Patton is another question. But given that he has shown that he can do good things as a general manager, it may mean that the new owners are not taking his first appointment as coach as the basis for the class.
But what will be interesting to watch is how the owners view what Button is doing in terms of building the team around Wilson and any future coaching appointments. After all, the Broncos remained stuck with Wilson until 2025, when they could trade him, or 2026, when they could release him.
As for Hackett, Sunday’s match against Jaguar could determine his fate.
