The “Dead to Me” star made a major return to the spotlight at the event, following her MS diagnosis, which she revealed publicly in August 2021. Before the ceremony, she told The New York Times it would be “the first time anyone has ever gone to see me.” As I am,” as she opened up about how her life has changed since her diagnosis.
“I gained 40 pounds; I can’t walk without a cane,” she said before the event. “I want people to know I know all of that.”

He continued, “Thank you for inspiring me to be fearless and really go for it, I love you,” and thanked Applegate for being there for him when he recently lost his mom, too. “I am so proud of your body of work,” he said, before praising her “powerful” performance in “Dead to Me” and thanking her for introducing him to his “spiritual community” and transforming his life.
As Sagal took the microphone, she celebrated Christina for being “so famous,” before praising Applegate’s humility, sense of humor, grace, and fortitude. [and] Courage” and telling her that she has been “at the top of my list of life teachers since you were 16”.
She continued, “You know, honey, some of us come into this life and it takes broad shoulders because what comes to us needs support to bear it. Broad enough to hold what comes up.” “I’ve seen you, the heights of love and tremendous success combined with extreme challenges, but you come with these shoulders, bearing the weight, bending and not breaking.”

Dead to Me writer Liz Feldman went on to call Applegate the “lioness” on set and “the den mother of all”, always looking out for everyone in the cast. She called Applegate one of the funniest people she knows, a comic genius and “one of the greatest actors of our generation”.

Next, Applegate climbed onto the platform, walked with a cane and supported by Sagal, who helped lift her. “It’s Katie stealing thunder and being behind me,” Christina joked as she began to speak.
“I can’t stand for long, so I’m going to thank the people I really need to thank. First and foremost, for my family who spoke here today, you’re everything to me. I love that I started with you,” she said of her co-workers and entrepreneurs who spoke. My people, you are my love.”
Then she thanked her agent and the rest of her team before heading off to her family.
“Finally, the most important person in this world is my daughter,” she said, turning to her daughter. “You are so much more than that, you are so much more than you know.” “You are so beautiful and kind and loving and intelligent and fun and I am happy every day to get up and take you to your school. Also in attendance were Applegate’s mother, husband Martine LeNobel, 11-year-old daughter Sadie — who was pictured wearing a face mask — Amanda Pierce and husband “sweetest thing” Selma Blair, who also has MS.
