20 people died when the tourist boat capsized
At least 20 people died on Sunday after a boat carrying tourists capsized in the southern state of Kerala. Most of the victims were children.
Twenty deaths have been reported so far, according to the daily “Times of India” and news agency PTI. Indian daily “Express” is 18.
“The loss of lives following the boat accident in Kerala’s Malappuram is saddening. Deepest condolences to (all) their bereaved families,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assuring compensation to the kin of each victim.
The incident took place at Thanur in Malappuram district of Kerala. Rescue operations are underway. Kerala State Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, who is coordinating the rescue operations, said that most of the victims were children during the school holidays.
“No life jacket”
There were more than 30 people on the boat when the incident took place. V said that 4 of them were taken to the hospital in a critical condition. Abdulrahman told PTI.
Survivors testified to the local press that they observed that several passengers were not wearing life jackets. The cause of the ship capsizing is not yet known.
