Kirchner Assault: Prosecutor Demands Initiation of Trial
The announcement angered Vice Chancellor Christina Kirchner. The investigation, according to him, should look beyond the trio accused of trying to kill her in September.
Prosecutor Carlos Rivolo asked Judge Maria Eugenia Capuchetti, who is overseeing the trial of Fernando Sabac Montiel, Brenda Uliarte and Gabriel Nicolás Carrizo, to remand them to court for attempted premeditated murder. The third is a “participant in a secondary capacity”.
Carlos Rivolo considers the investigation into the three suspects closed, but suggests that investigations continue to explore “the existence of other possible participants or sponsors.”
On September 1, 2022, Cristina Kirchner was shot in the head with a shotgun as she attended with supporters outside her home in Buenos Aires. They grabbed him and arrested him on the spot. His then-partner, Brenda Uriarte, was arrested a few days later, followed by another of their acquaintances.
After an eight-month investigation, no concrete evidence has emerged beyond the three, weakly politicized and above all motivated by hatred of Christina Kirchner, the former center-left president from 2007 to 2015. A prominent figure in Argentine politics.
“The Consecration of Impunity”
In a televised telephone interview in March, Sabac reaffirmed that Montiel “acted alone” and that he had no regrets for his action, which he said was motivated by the “situation of the country.”
The pro-Kirchner camp, for its part, supports the thesis of a large orchestration and the presence of sponsors. Cristina Kirchner spoke of private finance “identified with the government” under attack by her predecessor, the liberal Mauricio Macri (2015-2019). He tried in vain to challenge the trial judge, questioning his impartiality and reprimanding him for reluctance to explore certain avenues.
On Monday he again denounced “impunity”, marked by “telephones with erased memories”, “erased codes” and “a blatant and desperate attempt not to seek third-party participation, funders or inducements”, according to the inquiry.
