This June 2023, around the world, oceans are falling prey to aquatic fires that are destroying marine life. A worrying phenomenon linked to global warming and confirmed by scientific models.
This time, there really is fire in the lake… or rather in the seas. For weeks, oceanographers have been observing a worrying phenomenon: an underwater “megafire” spreading around the world. From the North Atlantic to Africa, temperatures are rising as oceanic heat waves wreak havoc beyond sight. Aquatic fires that kill marine life en masse: algae, corals, anemones, posidonia, gorgonians, sea urchins, molluscs. .
Heat records over 174 years. Our oceans are gradually turning into boiling pots of water. For example, off Scotland, an ocean heat wave rated “beyond extreme”, meaning a 5 on a scale of 5, was recently detected by the US National Oceanic Administration (NOAA). This Wednesday, the global average temperature of the North Atlantic reached a new record of +1.32°C or 23.3°C above normal for June.
