Rookie Stays Present Amidst All-Star Game Selection, Injury Concerns

12:33 a.m. UTC

PHOENIX – For a while, people keep trying to yank Corbin Carroll out of the present moment and into the future, but the D linebacker, the wise beyond 22, simply won’t allow it.

Staying current is what allowed him to thrive in the Minors last season while everyone was asking him when he was called up to the Majors. That’s what got him focused on rehabilitating his shoulder in 2021 when people wanted to see if he’d be the same hitter with a surgically repaired shoulder.

And that’s how he’s handled the past 10 days, an emotional rollercoaster that saw him elected to start for the National League All-Star Game team and then deal with having to leave games early twice after pain in the same shoulder.

“I’m weary for him,” said D-Pac manager Tori Lovolo of what Carroll has been up to over the past week. “And I don’t know how he does it. He’s a little kid and he manages a lot. He balances a lot. He balances his emotions, and it’s hard. It’s hard for anyone. So, you know, I just tried to meet him and let him know that I’m proud of him for that and that we’re behind him.” “.

Carroll was forced to leave Thursday night’s game after taking an awkward swing and feeling discomfort in his right shoulder. When Carroll walked off the field that night, Lovolo said he worried the season was over for the rookie phenom.

However, an MRI taken the next morning showed that the shoulder was structurally sound, and Carroll spoke his way into the lineup on Friday night. Was at it again on Saturday afternoon.

“There’s a lot going on,” Carroll said. “I just try to be in the present. These things happened in the past, and there are things that will come in the future, but [I’m] I just try to be here. We have a great group of guys who have kind of helped make that possible. It’s fun being around these guys every day.”

Carroll was at this moment in the tenth inning. He predicted that with a runner on second and third with the score tied, the Pirates would intentionally walk Ketel Marte to get to him.

“No surprise,” Carroll said. “I was in the crate before Ketel removed his things.”

With the count at 2-2, Pirates All-Star closer David Bednar threw a 98 mph fastball that Carroll missed. Bednar came back with a down-and-in curveball, and Carroll was able to drop the bathead on him and put him in for the game-winner.

“I’ve been working on reflexes with my hitting coaches before the game,” said Carroll. “Kind of cool [get the hit] On this kind of playing field.”

It was a good win for the D running backs, who, with starter Merrill Kelly on the injured list, went bullpen using seven pitchers to get over 10 runs batted in.

Meanwhile, the Pirates’ starting ace, Mitch Keeler, was outstanding, holding the D running back to just one hit over seven innings. They finally broke up and tied the game in the eighth, when reliever Colin Holdman gave up a homer to the first batter he faced, Alec Thomas, on his second pitch.

“We kept fighting all day,” Lovolo said. “The All-Stars didn’t get off to a skimpy start for us for most of the game, but we kept smashing it.”
