As Pirates pitcher Baker Mayfield tries to turn his football career around, he’s dealing with an issue with the money that has flowed from his power days into his NFL tenure.
According to KXAN.com, Via JoeBucsFan.comMayfield and his wife, Emily, He filed a petition on Tuesday Seeking information regarding possible misappropriation of $12 million by an investment firm in Austin, Texas. Complicating the situation is the fact that family members are involved.
The petition names various defendants: Camwood Capital Management Group, Camwood Ventures, Texas Contract Manufacturing Group, Unitech, Apex Machining, and Lor-Van. Seeks to turn over financial records and the ability to obtain other information regarding the handling of funds from 2018 through 2023.
From the legal filing: “Petitioners simply don’t know whether their money has been properly and efficiently invested, stolen or otherwise appropriated, or anything in between.”
According to KXAN, all of the witness contacts listed in the file are members of the Mayfield family.
It’s not a lawsuit, but it is an obvious precursor to one. Mayfield and his wife smell a rat, and are in the process of trying to confirm the presence of said rat.
And $12 million is a lot of money, especially for Mayfield. It’s the home run of about $20 million in gross earnings.
Mayfield made $32 million in football income from 2018 to 2021. In 2022, he made nearly $15.5 million – Giving away $4.6 million In order to facilitate trade for cheetahs. He will make $4 million this year, with incentives of up to $4.5 million.
He garnered a couple of national endorsements after early field success, including Progressive and Hulu. Earnings from these opportunities are not known to the public.
No matter how much more money Mayfield may have in the bank, it’s a sad situation for a variety of reasons. Mayfield had a very large pile of money that he was hoping to make more money with, and now he’s worried someone has taken his freedom with it. The fact that family members are caught up in the situation will lead to relationships that will likely never be mended, if Mayfield’s suspicions prove correct.
And if this is true, then this is another example of how difficult it is for professional athletes to find people they can truly trust. If you can’t trust family, who can you trust?
