(Reuters) – Spain’s soccer World Cup champion Olga Carmona learned after the match that her father had passed away, the Spanish Football Federation said on Sunday.
Carmona scored a goal in the 29th minute as Spain beat England 1-0 to claim their first Women’s World Cup title.
“The Spanish Football Federation deeply regrets to announce the death of Olga Carmona’s father. The footballer learned the sad news after the World Cup final,” the RFEF said on social media.
“We send our sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep sadness. We love you Olga, you are the history of Spanish football.”
A federation spokesman told Reuters that Carmona’s father had been suffering from a long illness and died on Friday.
According to Spanish media outlet Relevo, Carmona’s family and friends decided not to tell her so she could focus on the most important match of her life.
Carmona’s mother and siblings traveled to New Zealand during the group stage of the World Cup, but then returned to Spain. They arrived in Australia on Saturday to support the Real Madrid defender in the final.
