UNESCO and Huawei donated ICT equipment to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education last week. Within the framework of the Open School System project that uses technology for all, UNESCO and Huawei have operated the project in Ethiopia, Egypt and Ghana since 2020.
This donation falls within the framework of a three-year project scheduled to end this year and falls within the framework of the Tech4ALL initiative launched by Huawei in cooperation between UNESCO and Huawei, which provided 480 tablets, 48 access points and 24 smart panels to 24 middle schools in different regions of Ethiopia.
“I would like to thank UNESCO and Huawei once again for your dedication to education and generous donation during this critical time,” said Aileke Eshete, Ethiopian Minister of Education. Middle schools that received these benefits also stated: “This will help them access a wide range of educational materials. Expand their knowledge beyond the textbook and connect to a wide network of information and learning experiences around the world.”
The equipment delivered will help achieve the broader objectives of the project. In reducing the digital divide and promoting comprehensive and equitable education by strengthening the capabilities of teachers and institutions
“We are celebrating this important milestone in our journey. We have witnessed the delivery of state-of-the-art ICT equipment to middle schools across Ethiopia,” said Dr. Rita Bissonoth, Director of the UNESCO Coordination Office of the African Union (AU). “Schools have been carefully selected by the Ministry of Education and relevant regional education offices to be the beneficiaries of this project. There will be opportunities to use technology in the classroom. Provide opportunities for students to develop their learning, work together and improve skills.”
In Ethiopia, the 3-year Open Technology for All School System project focuses on expanding ICT infrastructure to connect pilot schools. Providing training for teachers and students. And creating a learning management system integrated with the teacher training platform. The project’s broader goals include building a school system capable of withstanding crises. This ensures that teaching and learning continue on an ongoing basis. Whether in normal situations or crisis situations by providing access to educational resources in homes, classrooms and other situations.
Since launching the project in 2020, project partners have identified and evaluated results in Ethiopia, Egypt and Ghana, with the aim of expanding the initiative across Africa. Particular emphasis is placed on access to schools in countries with limited resources. Converting it into a school equipped with technological equipment. This can support lifelong learning opportunities for everyone. Including educational equity and educational quality for all students.
UNESCO’s partnership with Huawei is supported by the ongoing efforts of the Ethiopian Government. Enhancing the potential of students and citizens in the country to make them participate effectively in the digital world and this ensures their readiness to face future challenges and opportunities.
