Bill Nelson, administrator of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), has appointed David Salvanini as the agency's first chief artificial intelligence officer. He was promoted from Media Director to the new position effective May 13.
“NASA has been using AI safely within its organization for decades. These advances in technology have helped us make many discoveries,” Nelson said in a NASA statement. “In his new role, David will lead NASA toward the responsible use of AI in exploring the universe and our world.” For the benefit of all humanity.”
Salvagnini's appointment as AI Administrator is consistent with President Joe Biden's Executive Order on the Safe Development and Use of AI on October 30, 2023, in which NASA appointed Dr. Katherine Calvin, the agency's chief scientist and environmental advisor who previously served as acting administrator for artificial intelligence.
Salvanini's responsibilities include planning and strategy for NASA's artificial intelligence applications across space exploration missions. Exoplanet research including back-end use within the agency and working with both government and private entities to further develop AI innovations to support NASA use.
