On July 19, 2024, the BBC reported that a large dinosaur skeleton fossil sold by Sotheby's at an event in New York City, USA, sold for a record price of US$44.6 million (or approximately 1,604 million baht).
The report notes that the fossil of the Stegosaurus, a herbivorous dinosaur also known as the apex, was 3.4 metres long and 8.2 metres long from nose to tip of tail, and is considered the most complete dinosaur skeleton ever discovered. The presenter, who did not wish to be named, said the apex was found on American soil and will remain in America.
Mr. Jason Cooper, professional fossil hunter Apex was discovered by chance in 2022 near Dinosaur City, Colorado, in the western United States. Before being named Apex, it means the greatest because of its large and massive size, and it stands out from its surroundings. It is believed to have lived about 150 million years ago, during the late Jurassic period.
The finest and largest Stegosaurus fossil will go under the hammer on Wednesday, July 17, making it the most valuable fossil ever sold at auction, Sotheby's said in a statement. The price was 11 times higher than the estimated value.
The dinosaur fossil that previously held the record for the highest bid was Stan's fossil, a Tyrannosaurus rex or T. rex, which sold for $31.8 million (about 1,143 million baht) in 2020.
