DE joins APEC 2024 meeting to emphasize importance of digital economy
From August 18 to 22, 2024, Mr. Ekvong Rimcharoen, Inspector General of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE), chaired the APEC Digital Economy Steering Group (DESG) meeting: DESG participated in the APEC Summit 2024, hosting a number of keynote discussions and debates covering digital economy leadership in APEC member regions in Lima, Republic of Peru.
This DESG meeting was lively with DESG members from all 16 APEC economies participating in this meeting. There will be four important policy discussion topics: Formalizing informal businesses, Governance of AI, Economic Development and Digital and Green Development, and Development of Digital Identity Systems, and these topics provided an opportunity for members from different economies to exchange ideas and share useful insights.
From the discussion on the above topics, issues related to promoting e-commerce and digital trade, supporting SMEs and ethnic minorities in using digital platforms to enter international markets, and establishing balanced digital regulations and new technology to support innovation and sustainable growth were highlighted.
The key outcomes of the meeting include enhancing the development of various economies. Leveraging the APEC Digital Innovation Sub-Fund and initiating discussions on the positions of DESG Chair and Vice Chair for 2025-2026, the meeting also saw active participation from the private sector and international organizations such as Walmart, ABAC, PECC, CIPL and the World Economic Forum.
Dr. Ekavong also spoke about the importance of collaboration between forums within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, and welcomed the collaboration between the forums to drive the region’s digital economy to grow more sustainably and inclusively.
