A federal court in the United States on Friday sentenced a member of a group of Islamic State (IS) kidnappers known as the Beatles to life in prison.

“You have to live with it for the rest of your life”

Alexanda Cote, a 38-year-old former British national, has pleaded guilty to killing four U.S. hostages in Syria and widely pleading guilty to kidnapping and torturing 20 Westerners. El Shafi’i El-Sheikh, a member of the cell, was arrested by Syrian Kurdish forces in 2018 and will be convicted in April after a rigorous trial and sentenced this summer.

The two appeared Friday in an Alexandria court near Washington, where relatives of their victims were last able to speak. “You were involved in the kidnapping, torture and murder of good and innocent people, and you must live your whole life now,” said Bethany Haynes, a daughter of Britain’s victim.

“You both lost!” A young woman, David Haynes, a support worker, was beheaded by Mohammed Emwazi, a third member of the Beatles, who was killed in a drone strike in 2015. This nickname was given to him. Three jihadists, who grew up and intensified in London, were taken hostage because of their British accent.

They were active in Syria from 2012 to 2015 and detained at least 27 journalists and aid workers from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Japan, New Zealand and Russia. A dozen people were hanged and their deaths were featured in IS propaganda videos that shocked the world.
