A woman has been appointed head of the North Korean embassy
Former Deputy Foreign Minister Cho Son-ho has been appointed to lead North Korean diplomacy under the Kim Jong-un regime.
State media reported on Saturday that North Korea had appointed a woman, Cho Son-hu, as foreign minister for the first time, as Pyongyang continued its weapons tests and ignored US calls for talks.
Former Deputy Foreign Minister Cho Son-hui has been appointed to lead North Korean diplomacy at a ruling party meeting chaired by President Kim Jong-un, the official KCNA news agency reported. He replaces Ri Son-kwon, a tough former military officer who led talks with South Korea.
Cho Son-hu, a business ambassador who speaks English fluently, was a close adviser to Kim Jong-un during the nuclear talks with the United States, and accompanied the then US president to the summit with the North Korean leader. Donald Trump.
Stumbling block
Seeing the failure of the Hanoi summit between the two leaders in February 2019, he held a rare question-and-answer session with reporters overnight. He later blamed Washington. “I think the United States has missed a golden opportunity by rejecting our proposals,” he said.
Since then, diplomacy between Pyongyang and Washington has been at a standstill. The North Korean regime has not responded in recent months to Washington’s offer to return to the negotiating table. North Korea, which has nuclear weapons, has been conducting weapons tests since the beginning of 2017, including the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
U.S. and South Korean officials have warned that Kim Jong Un’s regime could carry out a nuclear test. On Tuesday, US Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman warned that there would be a “quick and strong” response if Pyongyang carried out its seventh test.
