Authorities rescued an Algerian man who had been missing since 1998 and was found locked in a neighbor's house. Which was less than 200 meters from the victim's house.
An Algerian Ministry of Justice official revealed the disappearance of an Algerian man in 1998 during the civil war. Most recently, on May 12, he was found alive. He's been holed up in a neighbor's house for the past 26 years.
The ministry said that the man, named Omar bin Omran or Omar B, lives in the city of Djelfa in northern Algeria. He disappeared when he was 19 and police suspect he may have been kidnapped or murdered.
But Omar B., now 45, was found alive, kept in a sheep pen hidden in a haystack by a neighbour. It was only 200 meters from his house.
The ministry said it was investigating the matter. This was a “heinous crime” and the victims are currently receiving physical and mental medical treatment. Meanwhile, police arrested a 61-year-old suspect after he tried to escape.
The case was solved after the suspect's brother posted revealing information on social media. A source of dissatisfaction regarding the division of inheritance is allowing officials to follow and assist
“On May 12 at 8:00 p.m. local time, the victim, Omar Bin Omran, 45, was found in the basement of his 61-year-old neighbor,” officials said.
The victim's mother died in 2013, and the family believes Omar B is likely dead.
Algerian media reported that Omar B informed rescue workers who came to help. Sometimes he saw his family from a distance. But he felt unable to scream for help because of the “spell” the suspect had placed on him.
The civil war in Algeria was a period that saw many disappearances and deaths. An estimated 200,000 people were killed and up to 20,000 are believed to have been kidnapped, but according to SOS Desparros, the Algerian association for tracing missing persons during the war, nearly 8,000 Algerians disappeared during the period from 1992 to 1998.
