Apple has approved UTM SE, the first PC emulator available on the App Store. The app lets you emulate older versions of Windows or macOS on your iPhone or iPad.
After Apple revised its App Store guidelines to allow game emulators in April, the change in the EU and worldwide led to the launch of the game emulator on the App Store.
However, Apple rejected the UTM SE PC emulator app in June, not only from the App Store, but also from the app store. This includes third-party app markets in the EU, where Apple claims that only “retro games” emulators are allowed, not PC emulators.
However, in a social media post this weekend, the UTM SE developers confirmed that Apple has changed its mind. UTM SE is now available for download from the App Store and will soon be available through AltStore PAL in the EU as well.
UTM SE is a PC emulator that allows you to run classic software and old games. It has the following features:
- Both VGA mode for graphics and terminal mode for text-only operating systems are supported.
- Emulates x86, PPC, and RISC-V architectures.
- Use pre-built devices or create your own configuration from scratch.
- Based on QEMU, a powerful and widely used emulator.
The only thing users should know is that apps published on iOS cannot use a JIT compiler, which means that the functionality and performance of emulators running through UTM SE on iPhone and iPad will not be as good as those running on other platforms.
