Jean-Marc Reiser was sentenced Thursday by the Haut-Rhin Assize Court to life imprisonment with 22 years of protection for the 2018 assassination of Sophie Le Dan, AFP pointed out to its lawyers.

Jean-Marc Reiser, who had five days to do so, filed the appeal on Monday, his lawyers Emmanuel Spano and Thomas Steinmetz confirmed the information in the latest news from Alsace.

Last week, the Assize Court upheld the 62-year-old’s appeal and, at first instance, handed down the harshest sentence he had faced. The purpose of this appeal is to set aside this judgment of the Court of Appeal.

While he admitted in September 2018 that he had killed a 20-year-old student of Vietnamese origin “in a fit of rage” and dismembered her with a hacksaw before burying her remains in a forest, he has always denied his actions beforehand.

But jurors didn’t follow the arguments of the man who passed the strict judicial system, tried in a state of legal retrial after his first conviction for rape and sexual assault in 2003, and faced Colmer in his sixth impeachment trial.

Shadow areas

Despite a lengthy investigation and two trials, some gray areas remain, including the exact cause of the student’s death.

According to her story, after Jean-Marc Reiser visited her apartment, he took Sophie Le Dan by the hand and tried to kiss her. She then pushed him away and insulted him, causing him to “get angry” with several blows. Then the student was hit by the toilet bowl and fell down.

Therefore, jurors believed that “battery without intent to cause death” would have represented a less severe sentence than the 30-year sentence.
