It looks like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom finally has some serious competition for the potential to win the Game of the Year title. Also highlighted on social media is the latest PC release from Larian Studios Baldur’s Gate 3 It has already climbed to the top of Metacritic as the highest rated game of 2023.
Yes, it actually surpassed the Kingdom Tears critics’ score with a ‘96– get a degree97‘, which also sees it enter the ‘Top 25 Highest Rated Games of All Time’ on the same site. Admittedly, it’s still early days – Baldur’s Gate 3’s score is based on just 18 reviews from critics right now, compared to Zelda which was reviewed by 145 outlets.
In saying this, Baldur’s Gate 3 was already hailed as one of the greatest role-playing game experiences of all time and lauded for being a “complete” package upon release – so it doesn’t look like enthusiasm for it will be slowing down anytime soon.
In terms of user scores on Metacritic, Baldur’s Gate 3 currently sits at 9.4 Based on over 3,500 reviews while Kingdom Tears is 8.4 Out of 10 based on 8300+ user reviews.
Some of the other games in Metacritic’s top 10 games so far this year include Metroid Prime Remastered at #3 with a critical score 94a remake of Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 and Street Fighter 6 And Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Wave 4 DLC is in eighth place. And there are still many other major releases arriving later this year!
Here at Nintendo Life, we awarded Tears of the Kingdom a score of “impressive” 10 out of 10, calling it “a glorious, triumphant sequel to one of the best video games of all time”. And while Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be on Switch, you can still check out Larian’s RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2, which released on the hybrid system in 2019.
