The American President, in an exclusive interview with CNN, reveals that he will stop supplying weapons to Israel if a major attack on Rafah occurs. Ready to admit for the first time that American weapons have been used to kill civilians in Gaza.
On May 8, US President Joe Biden spoke to the media in person for the first time: if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a major attack on Rafah. He will stop some US arms shipments, and admit that American weapons have been used to kill civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Biden also pointed to the 2,000-pound bomb whose delivery to Israel was recently paused. He added: “Civilians have been killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of these bombs and other methods they use in densely populated areas.”
He added: I made it clear that if they enter Rafah, I will not buy the weapons that were used in the past to deal with Rafah and the cities.
President Biden's announcement marks a turning point in the seven-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas. His admission of using American bombs to kill civilians in the Gaza Strip was a clear recognition of the American role in the war.
Biden has come under additional pressure in the past. Both from society and from members of his party, which together called for restrictions on the transfer of weapons in light of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
But so far, Biden has resisted these demands and strongly supported Israeli efforts to pursue Hamas. Where more than a million Palestinian civilians took refuge. He seems to have changed his mind.
“We are not withdrawing from Israeli security. “We are rolling back Israel’s ability to wage war in those areas,” Biden said.
The US President said that although the United States would continue to provide defensive weapons to Israel, including the Iron Dome air defense system. But other arms shipments will be halted if a major ground offensive on Rafah begins.
We will continue to ensure Israel's safety regarding Iron Dome. And their ability to respond to attacks coming from the Middle East recently…but this is a mistake. We will not do that and we will not provide weapons and artillery ammunition.
One source stated that Israeli officials are very dissatisfied with the temporary suspension of arms deliveries.
Biden's move may widen the dispute between him and Netanyahu. The duo spoke by phone on May 6, with Biden saying: Israeli actions in Rafah have not yet crossed the line into densely populated areas. Even if their actions cause tension in the region.
“They did not go to the densely populated areas. What are they doing on the border? And now it is causing problems for Egypt. I have worked hard to ensure that we have a relationship and assistance,” he said, adding that he informed Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders of US support. Operations in densely populated areas are limited.
“I made this clear to Netanyahu and the war government, and they will not have our support,” Biden said. “If they go to these densely populated areas.”
Biden also warned Netanyahu of the danger of Israel's involvement in Gaza. This is similar to the US experience. In Afghanistan and Iraq
“I told him, 'Don't make the same mistakes we did. We only want bin Laden. We will help you find Sinfar.' (Hamas leader in Gaza) It would have been logical to go after Bin Laden. It wouldn't make sense to try to unify Afghanistan. In my opinion, it's unreasonable to believe “They have nuclear weapons in Iraq.”
Middle East conflicts have consumed much of Biden's time in recent months. His strong support for Israel sparked protests and anger. This includes many universities across the country.
