“Blue Beetle” dethroned “Barbie” at the top of the US box office

The Barbie era is over. At least at the box office, anyway.

For the first time since its July 21 release, the Greta Gerwig-directed film wasn’t the top-grossing film in the country for the weekend. Instead, DC superhero film “Blue Beetle” took its place and grossed an estimated $25.4 million, while “Barbie” slipped to second place and grossed $21.5 million, according to studio estimates.

“Oppenheimer,” which was released the same weekend as “Barbie,” fell to third place and grossed $10.6 million, bringing its US total to $285 million.

So far, Barbie has achieved $567 million at the US box office. The film ends up on top, breaking many records.

Last week, the name Warner Bros. highest-grossing domestic release, beating the previous title holder, 2008’s “The Dark Knight”. It’s also still on track to overtake the Super Mario Bros. movie. Movie from Universal Picture as the biggest domestic release of the year. This movie has grossed $574.2 million at the US box office since its release on April 5.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced last week that “Barbie” has also passed the $1.2 billion mark worldwide, having reached the $1 billion mark less than three weeks ago — a feat achieved by only about 50 films in history, adjusted for inflation, Paul Dhargarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, previously told CNN. She also ranks Gerwig as the best female film director in history.
