Bolsonaro was targeted at the end of June by an investigation that could disrupt his eligibility
The High Electoral Court announced on Monday that the trial against the former president will begin on June 22 for abuse of political power and use of false information, which disqualifies him.
Judges will convene in plenary to examine the charges against the former far-right leader, and if convicted, he could be disqualified from public office for eight years.
However, according to the court, it is the permission to prosecute Jair Bolsonaro for “abuse of political power and improper use of communication devices”. If necessary, the discussion may continue on June 27 and 29.
Jair Bolsonaro is on trial for attacking electoral justice and criticizing without evidence the reliability of electronic voting in Brazil, months before a presidential election won by Lula.
During a speech at the Presidential Palace in July 2022, he actually declared before European diplomats that he wanted to correct “flaws” in the electoral system and asked for “transparency” of voting. The former president mentioned the possible participation of the military in his plan. Brazil has been using electronic voting since the 1996 municipal elections, until which no security problems were noted.
The former president is facing a dozen administrative proceedings at the Electoral Tribunal for alleged abuse of political and economic power during the 2022 election period. The capital, Brasilia, faces prison terms by partisans on January 8.
