Cambodia launches five-year strategic plan to achieve “gender equality and women’s empowerment”

PHNOM PENH, April 8, 2019 (Xinhua) – The Cambodian Ministry of Women's Affairs today (Monday) launched a five-year strategic plan on gender equality and women's empowerment.

Aung Kantha Phawi, Minister She said the plan is a strategic plan to promote gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in Cambodia from 2024 to 2028.

Kantha Bhawi said the plan is designed to respond to the situation and development of the community. This is specifically in line with the Cambodian government's policy framework. It helps support the implementation of the Pentagon's strategy, Phase 1, on the Cambodian Sustainable Development Goals framework and UN commitments.

Kantha Bhawi added that the government will increase investments in gender equality and women's empowerment in the areas of economy, education, health and public leadership through the implementation of the strategic plan.

A report issued by the United Nations Development Program in March. It noted that Cambodia had made significant progress in promoting gender equality. It measures the proportion of women in parliament, education, the labor force and the maternal mortality ratio. Which has a general trend of improvement from 0.679 cases in 1990 to 0.461 cases in 2023.

The report shows that Cambodia ranks 116th out of 170 countries on the 2023 Gender Inequality Index.

The strategic plan launch ceremony was attended by about 500 people from all over the country. They are representatives of ministries, institutions, diplomats, civil society organizations, national and international development partners, policy makers, researchers, academics and youth.
