Read some of what Kyle Hightower of The Associated Press has written about Panthers coach Matt Rolle still deciding who will be the quarterback to start his team with Mayfield and Sam Darnold vying for the job.
Carolina Panthers coach Matt Roll has been adamant for weeks that he won’t be in a hurry to announce a winner in the ongoing quarterback competition between Sam Darnold and former Cleveland Browns player Baker Mayfield.
That hasn’t changed, even with his team just days after entering the field for their second exhibition match, a point that Rhule had previously indicated he wanted to settle.
Rhule said Wednesday that time isn’t as important as feeling good that he’s gathered all the information he needs.
“I think the thing I’ve said all along is that we wanted to at least get to that point where when we know, we know,” Rule said after the Panthers’ second joint training with New England.
“So, it could be any time. It could be another two weeks from now. It could be now. … I’m not saying it’s going to be two weeks from now. I’m just saying we’re just making sure we’re accurate.”
Mayfield and Darnold have been reps with the first team over the past two days, as Mayfield appears to have better offensive leadership and success in 11-on-11 periods against the New England defense.
But Darnold showed flashes of what caused the New York Jets to pick him for third overall in the 2018 draft, including as he works to turn a disruptive play into a TD pass to DJ Moore in the back of the finish zone during Wednesday’s two-minute dig.
“We’re both trying our best to win the job,” Darnold said. “I thought I improved a lot. I thought our whole team improved a lot, with their defense and the way they fly.”
None of the quarterbacks had a full line-up of playmakers this week, with Christian McCaffrey back to playing the limit, and receivers Robbie Anderson and Marshall Jr.’s terrace limited as well.
However, Ryul was impressed by what he saw.
“I think both men have killed a ton,” he said. “There weren’t a lot of interceptions but the ball was well protected. The key positions – the low zone (the red zone) and the two minutes – we’ve done what we need to get done to some extent. So, I think a lot of good things.”
Rolle said he plans to play mostly with his players from the second and third teams in Friday’s exhibition game with New England, though he did not say who would start playing in the middle.
Mayfield said he is as comfortable with the rules of the game as he has been since arriving from Cleveland via trade on July 6.
