According to separatists, two Armenian soldiers were killed in Nagorni-Karabakh
Separatist officials say two Armenian soldiers have been killed Friday by Azerbaijani forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the disputed region of Baku and Yerevan.
The separatist defense ministry said “two defensive soldiers were killed by enemy forces using small arms and war drones”. “The situation in the region is tense,” the ministry said, adding that “Russian peacekeeping mission can resolve this issue.”
This is the first such incident in the area since January.
On Thursday, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said that Azerbaijani forces had entered the village of Farouk, the area responsible for Russian peacekeeping forces, calling it a “complete violation of the ceasefire agreement.”
The French Foreign Ministry has condemned the “armed incidents and troop movements in the Farouk and Kramort regions”.
Nagorni-Karabakh “Paris also noted the new disruption in gas supply to the population” and called for the link to be restored, a ministry spokesman underlined.
Two conflicts
The Minsk Group was formed in 1992 with the co-leaders of France, the United States and Russia, with the aim of promoting the search for a peaceful solution to the Nagorne-Karabakh conflict.
The Nagorne-Karabakh mountain range, populated mainly by Armenians, was supported by Yerevan, which seceded from Azerbaijan in the fall of the Soviet Union, leading to the First War in the 1990s, killing 30,000 people and creating hundreds of thousands of refugees.
A new conflict erupted in the fall of 2020, killing 6,500 people in six weeks. This ended in a crushing defeat for Armenia, forcing Azerbaijan to surrender three areas forming a glacier around Nagorne-Karabakh. A ceasefire has been signed between Baku and Yerevan, mediated by Moscow, and Russian peacekeepers have been stationed in the disputed area.
“Misinformation”
For its part, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry on Friday accused Armenia of “misleading the international community” over the Karabakh situation. “Armenia is spreading misinformation. There is no basis for hysteria. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense is working only on the ground, with the aim of specifying areas for the establishment of its positions, ”he said in a statement.
Armenia on Thursday warned of a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Yerevan accuses Azerbaijan of deliberately confiscating gas for the Armenian people of Karabakh. Baku denied the “unsubstantiated” allegations, saying deliveries were halted due to bad weather.
