The government recognizes the “political” nature of the ELN
The ELN threatened to end all negotiations with the Colombian government unless it was granted the status of an “insurgent armed political organization”.
The Colombian government has granted the ELN the status of an “insurgent armed political organization,” a move hailed by the guerrillas on Saturday as essential to the continuation of the peace process launched by leftist President Gustavo Pedro.
The ELN has threatened to end all negotiations if this status is not granted, with the aim of distinguishing itself from other armed groups such as drug traffickers, while Gustavo Pedro is also trying to conclude a “full peace”.
The guerrillas hailed the peace process on Twitter as “agreement on issues that have not been able to make this peace process clear and concrete: the legitimacy of the ELN as an insurgent armed political organization.”

Representatives also agreed to set up a communication channel that would operate during the suspension of talks, the last round of which was held in Mexico City on February 13, guaranteeing Chile, Venezuela, Norway, Mexico and Brazil, as well as a bilateral ceasefire. Agenda.
The National Liberation Army (Queerist-inspired), the last formed guerrilla still active in the country, resumed talks with the government in November 2022 after a four-year hiatus.
President Pedro, a former guerrilla in the M-19 movement, ordered a cease-fire on January 1 with five armed groups, including the ELN, which quickly rejected the presidential declaration. In late January, the Colombian military killed nine members of the guerrillas.
Gustavo Pedro, who took office in August as the first left-wing president in Colombia’s history, aims to achieve “total peace” with the numerous armed groups often involved in drug trafficking.
