Mortality continues to rise during the rainy season
At least 57 people have already died in Ecuador due to bad weather since the start of the rainy season.
The National Risk Management Service announced on Saturday that 57 people have already died and 110 injured in the six-month-long torrential rains in Ecuador. The rainy season in April is expected to enter and intensify by the seventh month.
Unusually heavy rains and prolonged rains have already damaged or destroyed more than 5,455 hectares of farmland, more than 7,000 homes, schools or medical centers. In all, nearly 31,000 people have been affected by floods, landslides and other damage. The service said 24 provinces in the country were affected, with the exception of the Galapagos Islands, about 1,000 kilometers off the coast.
Thirty were killed and 87 were injured, especially in the Andean province of Pichincha, which was particularly abrasive. The January 31 floods and landslides in the capital, Kyoto, left 28 people dead and 52 injured after two decades of unseen water. Due to its location in the equator, Ecuador enjoys only two seasons, summer and winter. Scientists believe that climate change is exacerbating the risk of heavy rainfall around the world, as warmer climates contain more water.
