A 32-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son were seriously injured in a building fire in Mulhouse, northern France.

80 firefighters were needed to put out the fire.

A 5-year-old girl died on Monday in an apartment fire in Mulhouse (Hot-Rin), in which a 32-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son were also seriously injured. Prosecutor’s Office. Seven others suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation, according to firefighters and the Haut-Rhin prefecture.

“Unfortunately the child died as a result of this fire,” announced Edwige Roux-Morisot, a lawyer for the Republic of Mulhouse. The woman, born in 1990, her son, born in 2015, and a daughter-in-law, born in 2017, “were rushed to the hospital and the youngest of the children suffered cardiopulmonary failure and could not be revived,” he clarified.

According to firefighters, the fire broke out around 12:15 p.m. in an apartment on the 1st floor of a small four-story building northeast of Mulhouse. The fire, which spread to the 2nd floor and stairwell, was doused around 2pm and 80 firefighters were mobilized.

All the 3 victims were on the 3rd floor. “When she saw smoke in the common areas, the mother of the family opened the door and the window at the same time, which invited the air in,” explained Edwige Roux-Morisot.

“At this stage, the circumstances of the origin of the fire are unknown”, indicated the province in a press release, the social landlord M2A habitat, the owner of the shelter, will take care of the families involved. A manslaughter and self-inflicted wounds investigation has been launched. Gene Ratner, chairman of the Grand Est region and former mayor of Mulhouse, took to Twitter to express support for “everyone” in the face of “this drama (which) affects the entire Mulhouse community”.
