New fire in Landes, already burned 150 hectares of pines
A new fire broke out this Sunday in the Landes de Gascogne forest in western France. The fire that broke out on Sunday evening has destroyed 150 hectares of land. Fifteen houses had to be evacuated.
A fire that started on Sunday in the town of Mano (Landes) on the border of the Gironde has burned 150 hectares of pines and led to the preventive evacuation of forty people, the province of Landes said in a new emergency situation.
As of 10.30 pm (Sunday), around 150 hectares of pine trees were “still in progress” from the disaster, which “at this stage”, has not affected “any residence” in the village, a statement said.
A large system has been deployed to control the fire in this part of the Landes de Gascogne forest, with 240 firefighters from the Landes and external reinforcements from the Gironde and Île-de-France, supported by an aircraft dash and helicopter. According to the province, “many drops” were carried out by air. “As a preventive measure, about fifteen houses were evacuated, meaning about forty people, mostly welcomed by family or friends. If necessary, a shelter solution is provided by Sabers’ town hall”, and noted that “the evacuations took place peacefully”.
“Skip Department”
About twenty gendarmes are also involved in securing the neighborhood. Several roads are closed: RD 651 in both directions of Belhade and Hostens and RD 316 in the direction of Mano-Saint-Cymborion and RD 348 in the direction of Mano-Picanos. The province is asking people to “avoid the intersection” and “not to spread false information.” The director of the Landes Françoise Tahéri has implemented a departmental operations center (COD) in the province “in order to coordinate the operation of services”.
The fire broke out in Mano, a village of 130 people, thirty kilometers southwest of Landras, which was ravaged by one of the two “unusual” fires in the Gironde that also hit La Teste-de. Buch in the Arcazón basin devoured a total of 20,800 hectares of forest in 12 days in July.
