The NGOs, which received a historic condemnation from the government in late June over the decline in biodiversity, announced on Thursday that they would appeal. This has forced a review of the methods of approving pesticides.
At the end of June, a Paris administrative court ordered the government to repair within a year the ‘ecological damage’ linked to the massive use of pesticides in agriculture, which has been accused of causing a decline in biodiversity.
The court granted him time till June 30 in this ‘living justice’ case, which was filed by five NGOs (Pollinis, Notre Affaire à tous, The National Association for the Protection of Waters and Rivers, Biodiversity under our feet and ASPAS). 2024 to better respect its pathways to reduce pesticide use and conserve water.
Adequate assessment procedures
But five NGOs announced on Thursday that they would ‘appeal against part of the judgement’, ‘to compel the government to fill in gaps in pesticide risk assessment systems’. They filed a petition with the Paris Administrative Appeals Court on August 29.
‘Flaws in the assessment and approval procedures for marketing pesticides were recognized by the court, but the court did not compel the government to act on the matter,’ they lamented.
They thus ‘seek a decisive change in the methods of assessing the risks of pesticides, which is an essential prerequisite for halting the decline of biodiversity.
