CHICAGO — Finally, Gary Sanchez’s six-day, three-game, seven-game tryout.

“We tried to do a few things while Thomas was out,” said manager Buck Showalter. “Now Thomas is back, and we’re going in a different direction. We’re trying to make the club the best it can be every day. I think it’s now with Thomas back.”

Nido would resume his regular role as the Mets’ backup catcher behind Francisco Alvarez, whose recent hot streak played at least some factor in DFA Sanchez’s decision. Going into the Final Series on Thursday at Wrigley Field, Alvarez had three home runs in four games to produce a 1.687 OPS over that stretch. His slash streak in May was .294/.379/.667, ranking him among the game’s best rushers.

“Francisco is fine,” Showalter said, praising Alvarez’s defense as well as his playing contributions. “It’s just a combination of Tomás’ recovery [Alvarez] Work fine also. Our depth is good there in that position.”

“I really like him,” Nido added. “I always have. I always told him he belonged here.”

The Mets now have seven days to trade Sanchez (unlikely) or put him on outright concessions. While Sanchez may agree to go to Triple-A Syracuse in the absence of better opportunities outside the organization, the Mets can’t force him to do so. If Sanchez wants a release, the Mets have to grant it. He was released earlier this year by the Giants, before he was acquired by the Mets in a Minor League deal that became worth a pro-rata portion of $1.5 million once he became their big league roster.

Sanchez, 30, is a regular for the Majors for the Twins in 2022, hitting . 205 with a 0.659 OPS over 128 games. He was four years removed from his last All-Star season with the Yankees.

“I’m not sure what Gary’s plans are from here,” Showalter said.

As for the Mets, the team will roll with Alvarez and Nido for about two weeks, until Omar Narvaez is ready to come back off the injured list. Starting the team’s career entering the season, Narváez strained his left calf in early April and has been sidelined ever since, but began a minor league rehab stint Thursday with High-A Brooklyn. He is eligible to return from IL on June 5 and must be activated at or around that time.

Once Narváez returns, the Mets will need to figure out the best way to split the time between himself and Alvarez. They also must determine the long-term future of Nido, who signed a two-year contract worth another $3.7 million off-season to buy out his remaining refereeing years. Carrying three catchers is an option, especially given Alvarez’s potential as a part-time designated hitter.

But with that decision more than a week away, the Mets weren’t even sweating it out.

“We’ll see,” Showalter said. “Omar’s not too far away, we hope, but sometimes things change. He might not have been ready in 11 games or whatever. We’ll see. I’m glad we went downhill.” [Sánchez] track, and I’m glad Thomas is back.”
