Ashworth selected Creighton over a list of finalists that also included Gonzaga, BYU, Oklahoma State, and Washington. Recently visited the Bluejays campus in Omaha, Nebraska.
“We are excited to add Stephen and his wife Peyton to the Bluejay family,” head coach Greg McDermott said in a statement. “His ability to extend the floor with a three-point shot and make great passing decisions is exactly what we were looking for [for] in the guard position. Plus, he has the necessary leadership skills that are a perfect fit for our returning players. We can’t wait to get it on campus and bluejay! “
Ashworth earned first-team All-Mountain West honors this past season after averaging 16.2 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 43.4% from 3-point range. The 6-foot-1 guard has made great strides in each of his three seasons at Utah, improving in points, rebounds, assists, and 3-point shooting each season of his college career. He ranked in the top 10 nationally in both the 3-point and 3-point percentage points. Ashworth is also an 88.8% free throw shooter.
He is ranked ninth in ESPN’s transfer ratings.
Needing to replace Ryan Nimbard after the point guard entered the transfer gate earlier this month, Creighton should team up with Baylor Sherman to form a dangerous duo in the perimeter. Sherman announced last week that he is taking advantage of his extra year of eligibility and returning to the Blue Jays for another year. Trey Alexander and Arthur Kaluma are also expected to return, while Ryan Kalkbrenner faces a stay-or-go decision from the NBA.
Ashworth is Creighton’s second transfer of the spring, following Virginia Isaac Traudt’s transfer. Traudt is a former ESPN 100 recruit who redshirted last season in Charlottesville.
