8 killed in shooting in northern Mexico
Eight people were killed and one wounded Wednesday in a shootout between suspected criminals in Guachochi, in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, authorities said.
Prosecutors said in a press release that the facts occurred along a route in a remote mountain region inhabited by indigenous people of the Tarahumara tribe and through which drug traffic passes toward the United States.
Eight people were found dead, three of them with burns, while one injured person was taken to hospital. Both vans were found burnt at the spot.
The Sinaloa Cartel
According to local media, the conflict broke out between rival cells of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful drug-trafficking organizations. According to Chihuahua state press, armed clashes have been escalating in the Guachochi area for weeks, and many families have fled the town, which has about 14,500 residents.
In 2022, in another town in the same region, Cerogahui, two Jesuit priests and a tour guide were shot dead in a church. The kidnapped guide escapes and takes refuge in a church, but is caught by an assassin who shoots him and two monks.
