Erling Haaland broke Manchester City’s single-season record with his fifth goal of the match in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against RB Leipzig on Tuesday.
Haaland, 22, now has 39 goals in all competitions for City this season, surpassing the mark of 38 set by Tommy Johnson during the 1928-29 season.
City were leading RB Leipzig 6-0 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate when Pep Guardiola pulled off Haaland on the hour mark, with the Norway international scoring all five of his goals in the space of 60 minutes.
Haaland’s stellar night has put him in elite company, with only Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano scoring five goals in a single Champions League match. Haaland is also the third player to score 10 or more goals in a single European season, with Messi doing five times and Cristiano Ronaldo seven times.
Perhaps most remarkable is that Haaland still has 11 Premier League games to go, and with City also surviving in the FA Cup and Champions League, records could continue to drop.
Twenty-eight of Haaland’s goals have come in the Premier League, where he has an excellent chance of beating joint top scorers in one season Alan Shearer and Andy Cole with 34 goals each.
