Hurricane Ian kills 62 in Florida and North Carolina

The death toll from Hurricane Ian, which battered the southeastern United States last week, has risen to at least 62. Officials said this on Sunday.

Florida’s Board of Medical Examiners said Sunday it had confirmed 58 deaths from the hurricane, while North Carolina’s governor said Saturday four people died from Ian. 44 people have died in Florida before.

Ian, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States, leveled entire neighborhoods and destroyed power lines and bridges when it made landfall on the Southwest Florida coast on Wednesday. Strong winds and heavy rain have inundated inland neighborhoods, and search and rescue teams continue to search for victims.

After moving through Florida, Ian moved into the Atlantic, but again hit South Carolina as a Category 1 storm, while North Carolina also experienced heavy rain and strong winds.

On Sunday, the US Coast Guard said it was suspending the search for 16 migrants who went missing after their boat capsized during the hurricane. Two others on the boat were found dead, while nine others were rescued.
