Darnold completed the game going 6 of 11 for 89 yards and 1 touchdown. Darnold discussed the QB rivalry against Lance after the game.
“We were doing everything we could to get this job,” Darnold said. “I think for me, as a competitor, you’re expected to want to win this job. For me, it was just a matter of going out and playing really good football every day. I knew that at the end of the day if I had done that, I could have been in “A really good place to get this job. I wasn’t in my mind at all. Never. I didn’t think I had a really good chance of winning this job. I was just taking it day by day, training by training, one game at a time.”
Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was selected by the 49ers after San Francisco traded three first-round picks with Miami.
After a preseason game, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Lance had expressed interest in a backup role on another team. San Francisco has found a spot in Dallas that gives Lance a chance to backup QB Dak Prescott.
With Lance’s fresh start in Dallas, Purdy is “happy” and “excited” about Lance’s next chapter in the NFL.
“I’ve been able to go up to him and tell him I love him and like I said, how much I appreciate him,” Purdy said of Lance. “Obviously everything he’s done is for me and the team. So I told him I’m really happy for him and excited to see what he does with his opportunity and his NFL career. So, I’m excited for him.”
Lance will get his chance to return to the Bay Area in Week 5 when the Cowboys take on the 49ers.
