The Israeli military reveals it is capable of killing one of the masterminds of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, who was also a close aide to the head of the Hamas military movement.
Israel announced this and a Hamas leader was killed in an attack in the southern Gaza Strip on July 13, but the fate of the main target, Mohammed Deif, the movement's armed forces commander, remains unknown and uncertain.
The Israeli military said in a statement on July 14 that Rafi Salama, the commander of the Khan Younis battalion and a close associate of Deif, was “eliminated” in the attack.
According to the statement, Salameh was “one of Al-Dhaif's closest associates” and “one of the masterminds” of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
It is not clear whether the guest died in this latest attack. The Israeli military is investigating. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted he is not certain whether the guest is dead.
Deif is known as an elusive and extremely powerful figure in Hamas. He was one of the masterminds of the October 7 attack on Israel, and if his death is confirmed, Deif would be the highest-ranking Hamas leader to be killed since the war in Gaza began.
The guest is said to be Israel's most bitter enemy. He has survived seven Israeli assassination attempts, the last in 2021. He rarely speaks and has never appeared in public.
