Jalen Ramsey trades Dolphins, Rams: Miami has Pro Bowl CB duo with Xavien Howard, LA eyes the future

The Los Angeles Rams clawed their way to a Super Bowl LVI title in 2021 by throwing caution to the wind and trading multiple draft picks to big money stars like Jalen Ramsey, Von Miller, and more. Now, it looks like the Bills are due in Southern California for the Miami Dolphins in South Florida. Fins acquires three-time first-team All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Rams in exchange for the 77th pick in the 2023 draft (third-round pick), as well as 24-year-old Hunter Long.

This huge deal is quite recent, but there is now enough information to evaluate some degrees of the trade.

Having the 28-year-old star become one of only seven players in the entire league to make each of the last six Pro Bowls is a huge win. Ramsey was the third-highest ranked Pro Football Fox center last season with a score of 86.4, trailing only this year’s 2022 NFL Defensive Rookie and New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner (87.9) as well as Denver Broncos’ 2022 First-Team All-Pro Pat quarterback Sirtin II (86.8).

To be able to bounce back from the botched move that was a five-year, $82.5 million Byron Jones contract to add Ramsey to the secondary along with Pro Bowl cornerback Zavian Howard and promising 23-year-old safety Jevon Holland give Miami one of the best defensive backfields in the world. The entire NFL. That’s a big deal because the Dolphins will take on Josh Allen Beals twice, Mac Jones with actual offensive coordinator twice, and Possibly Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets twice. Shout out to GM Chris Greer for maximizing the salary cap window offered by starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in his rookie deal for two more seasons adding All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill and Pro Bowl pass rusher Bradley Chubb and Ramsey via trade for the last 365 days. The cap may not look pretty after the 2024 season, but as Greer of the Rams noted, that’s tomorrow’s problem.

Rams: C+

For Los Angeles, it’s now time to foot the bill for Super Bowl LVI, and they’re paying. On Friday, General Manager Les Snead noted quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Cooper Cobb, and defensive tackle Aaron Donald as the team’s “columns. Ramsey was notably absent from that statement, suggesting he was up for grabs. After finishing 5-12 in 2022, the worst record in NFL history for a Super Bowl champion, Snead correctly recognized that their lack of depth undermined them. Any hopes of staying afloat after all three pillars of the team were injured last season.

So, he’s now making adjustments to make sure the Rams are a deeper team in 2023 with an additional third round pick in addition to 24-year-old Hunter Long. He’s a great backup to Tyler Higbee, but the draft pick is the real prize here because Kams’ sixth draft pick belongs to the Detroit Lions in April due to a Stafford trade. Thanks to this deal, Los Angeles now has three picks in the first three rounds of the draft, but it’s one-and-two-thirds second round picks. Snead could be looking to make a first-round pick for the first time since taking Jared Goff first overall in 2016 in the 2024 NFL Draft. It would have been nice to get at least a second round player in the deal for a player of Ramsey’s caliber, but the Rams aren’t in a position to They enter this season.
