LAS VEGAS – UFC 279 is still a few days away, but Jake Shields I already got a dose of Shemaev’s puns.
Former Strikeforce Champion and co-star Nate Diaz said he was part of a bout with Chimaev on Monnday while helping the UFC middleweight Paulo Costa Work on his wrestling. Shields told MMA Radio Junkie that Chimaev interrupted his grappling session with Costa at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, which he wasn’t happy with.
“I was there this morning training with Paulo Costa, talking about some techniques and just swiping,” Shields said, “and all of a sudden he started yelling at us and cursing Paulo like, ‘Okay, you wanna fight? “We look, he and like 10 men.
“So Paulo jumps up and starts talking. I ran to support Paulo because I don’t know if they were trying to jump on him, right? There were two guys, so I wasn’t sure if they were going to jump on him. There were two guys we didn’t recognize.”
“So we ran and started talking, and Khums kept talking, ‘Let’s fight now, let’s fight now,'” but he says he’s walking down the stairs. It sounded like it was kind of acting out for the cameras more than anything else. I think someone said then that He’d been looking for us for 10 minutes. If he wanted to fight Paulo, he would have run in there and started swinging on him, not standing outside the cage and saying, ‘Let’s fight now. Let’s fight now.’
“It seemed like a weak thing. I think that was why he was upset because Paulo called him a fake gangster, and that was a great example of him being a fake gangster.”
Shields has been a Diaz teammate for many years and has been in Diaz’s corner for some of the biggest fights of his career. On Saturday, Chimaev will face Diaz in the UFC 279 main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
