Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) reported that on April 3, the first man to receive a “pig kidney” transplant was discharged from the hospital. He is still in good health
The story follows the case of Richard Solomon, 62, a patient with end-stage kidney disease. Receive an animal-to-human organ transplant (organ transplant) on March 16, or two weeks before.
The hospital stated that, “Suleiman’s kidneys are working well. He no longer needs dialysis.”

In 2018, he underwent a human kidney transplant from a deceased donor, but the recipient kidney began to fail. So the doctor suggested a pig kidney transplant.
“I saw it not only as a way to help me. But it is also a way to bring hope to thousands of people who need organ transplants to survive.
In the past, pig kidney transplants were only performed on brain-dead patients. This makes Suleiman the first kidney patient to receive a pig kidney. The transplanted kidney was modified by Cambridge-based pharmaceutical company eGenesis to “remove the harmful pig gene.” He added some human genes to increase compatibility with humans.
The team behind the transplant hailed the move as a historic step that could provide a solution to the world's organ shortage.
“The availability of more organs as a result of this technological advance can go a long way toward ultimately achieving health equity,” said Winfred Williams, Sulaiman’s physician. “It offers the perfect solution to kidney failure. Providing the best performing kidney for every patient who needs it.”
According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, more than 100,000 Americans will need life-sustaining organ transplants, and the number of living and deceased donors will reach less than 23,500 in 2023.
Although this is the first pig kidney to be transplanted into a human, it is not the first pig organ used in a transplant. Two patients previously underwent pig heart transplants in 2022 and 2023, but both died shortly after surgery.
