Bags containing human remains have been found in western Mexico
Around 45 bags of human remains were found in a valley in Jalisco state during a search for seven teenagers who had been missing for ten days.
“Forty-five bags containing human remains matching those of men and women have been recovered,” the state attorney’s office said in a statement Wednesday, which continued to gather evidence Thursday.
The discovery was made Tuesday at the bottom of a 40-meter canyon located in the municipality of Zaboban, on the outskirts of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state.
Authorities are on the lookout for two women and five men in their 30s who have been missing since May 20. The reports related to the search for the missing persons were filed separately and on different days, but the officers realized that they all worked in one call center. The place where these young men worked is also in the same area where the human remains were found.
Drug trafficking
According to the first element of the investigation, the call center is involved in illegal activities. However, a hypothesis was rejected by the relatives of the missing, who accused the authorities of blaming the victims.
In recent years, human remains have been found in bags or secret graves in various parts of the state of Jalisco. In 2021, approximately 70 bags containing the human remains of eleven individuals were found in Tonala, near Guadalajara.
Since the launch of a broad and controversial military operation aimed at combating drug trafficking in December 2006, Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 murders and 100,000 disappearances.
