Wanting to reduce dependence on China, a “misconception”
Western calls to reduce dependence on China are a “false proposition” in a world of interconnected economies, Premier Li Keqiang lamented on Tuesday.
The European Commission last week unveiled its strategy to respond more decisively to risks to its economic security, particularly China in the crosshairs.
Germany, where Li Qiang recently made an official visit, said it wanted to diversify its partners to “reduce the risks” associated with its heavy dependence on China. Other Western countries have taken a similar position.
“In the West, some hold the policy that we should reduce our dependence and eliminate risks,” the Chinese premier said at the opening of the World Economic Forum in Tianjin (North China).
“Both these concepts are a false proposition, because with the development of economic globalization, the global economy has become an interconnected society,” he said, uttering the word “cooperation” on countless occasions.
“Countries’ economies are intertwined, interdependent, mutually thriving and growing together. This is basically a good thing, not a bad thing! “
This edition of the World Economic Forum, colloquially known as “Summer Davos”, is the first to be held in China since 2019 due to the Covid pandemic. It will last until Thursday.
