The Buccaneers and receiver Mike Evans are Currently in a contractual deadlock. They have eight days to break it.
Evans’ agent, Derek Gilmour, has set a deadline of Saturday, September 9, to complete the deal.
“When Mike Evans was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization, his promises were to win a Super Bowl and be a BUC for life,” Gilmore said. “He knew he would do everything he could to achieve both.”
Evans is entering the final year of his current contract.
“Over the past nine years, Mike has set records on the field that will surely put him in the Hall of Fame. He is considered one of the most selfless teammates by his peers and the coaching staff and has been one of the most charitable players in the NFL. He loves Tampa and the community surrounding the Bucs, After fulfilling his promise to win a Super Bowl, he hopes to fulfill his promise to be a Bucs for life.As he enters his 10th year, he faces the prospect of doing so with uncertainty surrounding his future.
Gilmore explained that he worked with the front office over the past two years to finalize a new deal for Evans. Gilmour blames the lack of a deal directly on ownership.
“Many players of his stature would have sat out the camp so as not to risk injury, but Mike continued to train hard, as always, because he puts his team first,” Gilmour said. “When you have a player who’s going to be a Hall of Famer and still has four to six more years to make an impact in the league, you’re moving heaven and earth to keep him on your team, and hopefully ownership feels the same way.”
“This is not a tactic and the ball is in the owner’s court,” Gilmour insisted. He gave the team until next Saturday to reach an agreement. After that, Gilmore will “break” the discussions.
Of course, if the Buccaneers decide during the season to give Evans what he wants, the deal will likely happen. But Evans made it clear, through his agent, that he wanted it to happen before the first game started.
