The Detroit Lions added a veteran long snapper to compete with Scott Daly.
The snack right after Sunday’s bombshell that the Detroit Lions agreed to terms for defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson was a rather significant special teams move made by the team. According to several reports, the lions Sign long snapper Jake McQuaide to a one-year, $1.3 million dealincluding a $152,500 signing bonus.
McQuaide is an important signing because the Lions had some problems with the long snapper last season, as explained by Pride of Detroit special team expert Hamza Bakush in his free agent profile of current Lions long snapper Scott Daly:
It’s been a rollercoaster of the season for Daly. With the Lions still in the kicker’s carousel game, they had to start one at long snapper, with Daley having a rough patch during the middle of the season. After a groundout went by in Week 7 (his only fumble) and a PAT snap did the same in Week 9, Special Teams coordinator Dave Webb came to Daley’s defense.
Even though the Lions have offered Daly a free agent tender for exclusive rights — essentially guaranteeing he’ll be on the roster during offseason workouts — McQuaide may be considered a significant upgrade. Ages 35, after spending 10 years as a long snapper for St. Louis/Los Angeles RamsTime there overlapped with current Lions general manager Brad Holmes. He also made a file Pro Bowl Twice (2016, 2017).
Last year, McQuaide was the Cowboys’ long snapper, but he suffered a torn triceps muscle in Week 4 and missed the rest of the season.
So, it looks like the Lions will have a long battle in the snapper camp this year.
