Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has announced his retirement from playing for the German national team.
“After thinking about it for a few weeks, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to end my international career,” Gundogan said.
“The highlight for me was the great honour of leading the team to the European Championship at home last summer! After so many years, we finally managed to make the nation proud again. I am very happy to have taken part.”
Gundogan is considering his options to leave Barcelona this summer. He revealed that he has decided to retire from playing with the national team. After feeling physically and mentally exhausted before the start of Euro 2024
“I will definitely remain a fan of this national team. I sincerely hope that we can move forward together. There is nothing to prevent us from being one of the favourites for a place at the 2026 World Cup. We have a great coach. A really strong team and a great team spirit,” Gundogan added.
The 33-year-old announced his decision on social media, just over a month after taking charge of the German national team. As hosts, he took part in Euro 2024 but was eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Spain.
The former Manchester City midfielder has made 82 appearances for Germany, making his debut in 2011.
