“One Piece” has already been removed from the list of the top 10 series on Netflix by a new show

The longer the offer stays at the top Netflix Top 10 list, the more likely it is to be renewed. But one piece? The big-budget series had not premiered a week before its elimination, raising questions about whether Netflix would continue to invest in a second season, despite such positive reception.

It’s not as if some huge show is back to take its place. No. 1 is now a comedy special called Beautiful Dogs by Shane Giles, which is only 52 minutes long. Now, with such a short lead time, it’s possible that One Piece could be back at number one in a day or two, but the fact that the stand-up took it away at all isn’t great.

One theory is that viewers were so excited about One Piece that they got hooked on it pretty quickly and moved on. It achieved 140 million watch hours between August 31 and September 3, which is good in the broader context of the service. But One Piece is a very expensive show, and the more expensive the show, the better it will do to justify its existence (see: Altered Carbon, which wasn’t good enough so it was cut in budget for a second season, which was bad, then cancelled).

I think Netflix would be wise to continue investing in One Piece here. They need to find new ongoing series after many of their top favorites like Stranger Things have ended. It looks like One Piece might benefit from word of mouth, and I hope it gets remade eventually. Lord knows there’s enough source material to keep this going forever.

The rest of the list is pretty standard, Who is Erin Carter?, Live to be 100, Ultimatum, Painkiller, they all go down after a good performance. Featured on the list are new episodes of SWAT, a Netflix-licensed deal. This is the first time I’ve realized that Disenchantment is still getting new seasons, and that the animated show is actually getting to five Seasons now. How did this happen? Another licensed show, Call the Midwife, a long-running spin-off, just placed its number 12y(!) on Netflix as well, making the list at number 10.

One Piece is the biggest question mark here. I highly recommend the series regardless of whether you have any experience with manga or anime. I didn’t, and I’m having a great time halfway through the series so far. I hope it ends up as a long-running feature for Netflix, although in this age of streaming and strikes, nothing is a guarantee of that.
