A transgender Brazilian has filed a complaint against Italian police after being brutally beaten, the violence was captured on video and has gone viral, his lawyer said on Tuesday.
“She thought she was dead.”
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said disciplinary sanctions were being considered against police officers responsible for Thursday’s violence in the city in the north of the country. A judicial inquiry has been launched.
The video shows the 41-year-old surrounded by three police officers, hitting her in the head and ribs with their batons and spraying gas in her face as she stood in the street with her hands in the air. She is then handcuffed and taken away. According to her lawyer, her client, Deborah Piazza, identified only by the pseudonym Bruna, was locked in a police car and injured for 20 minutes. “At that moment, she had trouble breathing and thought she was dead,” Deborah Piazza told AFP.
According to the union, the aim is to control it
Daniele Vincini, head of the police union, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper that the police used force against the Brazilian and did not injure him. They aimed to subdue her as she spat blood in their direction, he said.
“I felt like I was treated like a dog,” Bruna told Corriere della Sera. “I raised my hands and asked them not to hit me, I was so scared,” he added.
