The problem of broken glass screens has always been one of the most common incidents. In the past, despite the development of strong glass, there is still a problem in hitting the right point. As a result, many people still need to install impact-resistant glass or a protective film.
A team of researchers recently revealed that they are developing a new type of screen glass. Which can repair itself using only water. The glass structure is made by joining amino acids (peptides) together using water until it forms a glass. It also obviously allows light and infrared rays to pass through. The reflectivity is also at the same level as commonly used glass.
As for the repair process in the case of broken glass or repairing surface scratches, only a little water is required to bind the peptide molecules. But for now there are still some restrictions: This type of glass must contain water at all times. Symptoms of dryness may appear when used for a period of time. When there is a lack of water, the peptide molecules will separate from each other. Which led to the glass breaking. Therefore, it may need further development to be able to conserve water for as long as possible.
Another limitation, the researchers revealed, is that currently only mirror shapes with convex curvature can be made. Because when the water is absorbed the glass will have a teardrop-shaped convex curvature. Therefore, it may be more suitable for use as contact lenses. Therefore, the research team still has to develop further to be able to make smooth glass sheets. Including having to find a way to repair the glass in cases where it is used as mobile phone screen glass. Because if you immerse the machine in water frequently, it will not be very beneficial for the machine.
