Rockstar Games has announced that it has acquired CFX.RE, the group behind some of the most popular modding tools for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
“Today, we’re proud to announce that Cfx.re – the team behind Rockstar’s largest roleplaying and creator community, FiveM and RedM – is now officially part of Rockstar Games,” the company wrote on its website.
Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as the Rockstar creative community has found new ways to expand the capabilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly by creating dedicated role-playing servers.
As a way to further support these efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the role-playing creative community.
“By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this amazing community and improve the services they provide to developers and players.”
Role-playing in GTA 5 exploded in popularity on Twitch during the pandemic. Hundreds of thousands of viewers watch this mod, which sees players use the GTA framework to create entirely new game modes, an expanded inventory system, law enforcement framework, and other life simulation-style mechanics.
The move may come as a surprise to those who remember Rockstar’s past history with mods.
In 2021, Rockstar sued a group of modders who allegedly reversed the source code for GTA 3 and GTA Vice City. This issue was later settled privately.
