Blinken discussed human rights with the crown prince
US diplomatic chief Anthony Blinken met the Saudi prince in Jeddah from Tuesday to Wednesday and discussed human rights with him.
The two had an “open and honest conversation” and Antony Blinken raised the issue of human rights “generally and specifically” with Mohammed bin Salman, the official said on condition of anonymity.
The meeting, which began at midnight local time at the royal palace and lasted one hour and 40 minutes, found several points of “recognition that we have differences and unite (…)”. – he added. “They discussed the normalization of relations with Israel and agreed to continue the dialogue in this regard,” the US official said.
Discussions also focused on the conflict in Sudan, where the United States and Saudi Arabia, mediators, have failed to enforce several truces between the warring generals.
Riyadh after Jeddah
Antony Blinken and Mohammed bin Salman reaffirmed “their commitment to stability, security and prosperity in the Middle East and beyond,” including ending the conflict in Yemen, the spokesman said in a statement.
The US secretary of state arrived in Jeddah on the Red Sea late on Tuesday, the first day of a visit to Saudi Arabia. After Jeddah, Antony Blinken will travel to Riyadh on Wednesday to attend a meeting of foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
On Thursday, still in the Saudi capital, he will co-chair with his Saudi Arabian counterpart a meeting of the coalition of countries fighting the Islamic State (IS), a jihadist group formed in 2014 that unites dozens of countries.
